Celebrations are in order after KC Designer Dominic Massarella was given special ‘highly
commended’ recognition by judges of the 2022 Kbsa awards.
The accolade was awarded to Dominic in the ‘Kitchen
Designer of the Year for Kitchens over £50k’ category. This is the first time judges have bestowed such commendations, and, according to Kbsa national chair Richard Hibbert, it was done so to reflect the “extremely high” standard of shortlisted entries.
Dominic’s entry of a complete lifestyle kitchen project for a new build property in Yorkshire also saw him win the ‘Young Designer of the Year’ title in the same awards, which recognise the exceptional talent of independent kitchen and bathroom retailers in the UK.
Commenting on the special commendation, Dominic said: “I really enjoyed working on this project as the client had an active interest in the design, which meant a fully collaborative process to bring all ideas to fruition.
“Visiting the home post-project and seeing the space work exactly as the client wanted - both for their busy family lifestyle and for entertaining others - was incredibly rewarding. So to win an award and receive highly commended recognition on top of that for the design is just amazing.”
Dominic first joined the KC Design House team in June 2018 after completing his degree in Interior; Spatial Design at University of the Arts London: Chelsea College of Arts.
With interests in architecture, art and furniture design, he channels his talents and inspiration into transforming client briefs into wonderfully distinct spaces at properties throughout Yorkshire and beyond.
When asked what he enjoys most about his role, Dominic says it’s the challenge of
completely changing a space to produce results that will enhance a client’s lifestyle.
“We design with both the space and the client in mind,” says Dominic. “And we don’t shy
away from proposing bigger, structural changes, such as moving doors and windows or
taking out walls, if we know it’s going to maximise the potential.
“I also really enjoy building a relationship with the client and drafting a concept that will work for them and how they want to use the space.
“I love starting with a blank page, establishing the client’s brief and then getting a concept to that eureka moment where the design magic happens, and it all clicks into place.”
